Overview: Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Whisky is an exquisite single malt whisky hailing from the renowned Kavalan Distillery in Taiwan. Celebrated for its unique aging process, flavor complexity, and the innovative use of port casks, this technical description provides insights into the key characteristics and meticulous production that make Kavalan Concertmaster a distinguished choice among whisky connoisseurs.

Ingredients: Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Whisky is crafted from premium ingredients, including:

  1. Malt: High-quality malted barley is used as the primary grain in the whisky's production, contributing to its rich and distinct flavor profile.

Distillation and Aging: The production process of Kavalan Concertmaster involves the following key steps:

  1. Milling and Mashing: The malted barley is finely milled, and the resulting grist is mashed to create a sugary liquid known as wort. This wort is fermented to produce a wash with the desired alcohol content.

  2. Fermentation: The wash is transferred to fermentation tanks, where specific yeast strains initiate fermentation. This process typically lasts several days, allowing yeast to convert sugars into alcohol and develop key flavor compounds.

  3. Distillation: The fermented wash undergoes distillation in copper pot stills or column stills, capturing the essence of the whisky. Kavalan is known for its unique use of copper stills and innovative distillation techniques.

Aging: Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Whisky is aged in a combination of oak casks, including ex-port wine casks, for an undisclosed duration. The influence of the port casks imparts a distinctive character to the whisky.

Tasting Notes: Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Whisky offers a complex and alluring tasting experience. Tasting notes may include:

  • Appearance: The whisky exhibits a rich amber or copper color, influenced by its time in oak and port casks.

  • Aroma: The nose is filled with captivating aromas of dried fruits, red berries, and plum, complemented by hints of vanilla, oak, and a subtle floral note.

  • Palate: On the palate, expect a harmonious blend of flavors. Sweet and jammy notes of red currant, blackberry, and fig mingle with toffee, cocoa, and a touch of spice. The mouthfeel is luscious and velvety.

  • Finish: The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, raisin, and a gentle spiciness, showcasing the whisky's depth and the influence of the port casks.

Packaging: Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Whisky is typically presented in an elegant bottle and labeling, reflecting its premium quality and the innovation of the Kavalan Distillery.

Conclusion: Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Whisky, available through Third Base Market & Spirits, represents the excellence of Taiwanese whisky craftsmanship. Still every bit the Kavalan fan I was before opening this

This is another good one from the lovely folk making single malts in the tropics. (Dad, I know you wouldn't have been able to believe it, but, seriously--whisky from equatorial regions really is damn good). This one is, as you'd expect, one of the sweeter ones in their lineup. Just for the record, I've tried less than half their lineup, but everything else was clearly drier than this one. Anyway, nice forceful note from the port barrels--a bit of tannic tawniness, lots of berries and vinous bits. Then the whiskey comes through, doing its thing: warm, toasty, nutty, a bit smoky, plenty of tobacco leaf, lots of vanilla. Finishes warm and fruity. This one is fun to drink and it would certainly be lovely if I could have some whenever I felt like it. But it's on the pricy side for that.
