Production: The production of James E. Pepper 1776 Rye Whiskey 100 Proof adheres to the time-honored methods of American whiskey-making:

  1. Ingredients: The whiskey is made from a mash bill predominantly consisting of rye grain, which imparts a spicy and robust character.

  2. Mashing: The grains are mashed to create a fermentable wort, which serves as the foundation for fermentation.

  3. Fermentation: Yeast is added to the wort, initiating fermentation, and yielding a high-proof, flavorful distiller's beer.

  4. Distillation: The distillation process typically occurs in copper pot stills, which allow for the retention of complex flavors.

  5. Aging: James E. Pepper 1776 Rye Whiskey is aged in new, charred oak barrels for a period of 3 to 5 years. During this time, the whiskey gains complexity, color, and character from the wood.

Tasting Notes: James E. Pepper 1776 Rye Whiskey 100 Proof offers a robust and flavorful profile:

  • Appearance: Deep amber, with hints of copper, showcasing its time in oak barrels.

  • Aroma: The nose reveals rich, spicy rye notes with hints of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak. There's a subtle herbal undertone and a touch of citrus zest.

  • Palate: On the palate, the rye's spiciness takes center stage, delivering a bold and peppery kick. This is balanced by sweet caramel and toffee, along with the warmth of oak and a touch of dried fruit.

  • Finish: The finish is long and warming, with the spice mellowing into a pleasant, lingering sweetness, leaving behind a hint of oak and vanilla.

A little sweet. Decent sipper, great value.

I'd buy this one again for company, and be happy enough to finish it, but it's a bit of a stretch to call it a truly interesting sipper. It's well made, balancing pepper and sugar without getting sloppy, and hides the alcohol well. Unless you're burning out on sugary stuff it's alright.
