Overview: Auchentoshan Three Wood Single Malt Scotch is a distinctive whisky from the Lowlands region of Scotland. This technical description provides insights into its unique production process and tasting profile, offering a glimpse into the world of single malt Scotch.

Ingredients and Production: Auchentoshan Three Wood is crafted with precision and care, using the following key ingredients and production techniques:

  1. Malted Barley: The whisky is made exclusively from malted barley, known for its ability to produce a rich and flavorful spirit.

  2. Water: Auchentoshan sources water from the nearby Kilpatrick Hills, ensuring that only the purest water is used in the production process.

  3. Triple Distillation: What sets Auchentoshan apart is its triple distillation process. Unlike many Scotch distilleries that double distill, Auchentoshan's whisky is distilled three times in traditional copper pot stills. This triple distillation results in a lighter and smoother spirit.

  4. Maturation: Auchentoshan Three Wood derives its name from its unique maturation process. After an initial period in American bourbon barrels, the whisky undergoes a secondary maturation in three different types of casks:

    • Oloroso Sherry Casks: These contribute rich, dried fruit and nutty notes.
    • Pedro Ximenez Sherry Casks: Adding sweetness and complexity with flavors of dark chocolate and figs.
    • American Oak Bourbon Casks: Providing vanilla and caramel undertones.

Tasting Notes: Auchentoshan Three Wood offers a layered and complex flavor profile, with tasting notes that may include:

  • Appearance: The whisky typically displays a deep amber or mahogany color, a testament to its sherry and oak cask maturation.

  • Aroma: On the nose, you may encounter a symphony of rich and enticing aromas, including dark fruits, dried raisins, toffee, and hints of vanilla. There's a subtle oakiness in the background.

  • Palate: The palate is a journey of flavors. You may savor notes of dark chocolate, dried fruits, and Christmas cake, with a luscious sweetness from the Pedro Ximenez casks. The influence of American oak adds vanilla and baking spices.

  • Finish: Auchentoshan Three Wood boasts a long and warming finish, with a delicate balance of sweet and spicy elements. The sherry influence lingers, leaving a satisfying, lingering complexity.

Packaging: Auchentoshan Three Wood Single Malt Scotch is typically presented in an elegant bottle, featuring the distillery's logo and branding. The packaging reflects the whisky's premium quality and the craftsmanship behind its production.

Serving: This single malt Scotch is best enjoyed neat or with a drop or two of water to release its full range of flavors. Its triple distillation and unique maturation process make it a versatile choice for whisky enthusiasts seeking complexity and depth in their drams.

Conclusion: Auchentoshan Three Wood Single Malt Scotch, available through Third Base Market & Spirits, is a testament to the art of triple distillation and creative cask maturation. It offers a rich and multifaceted tasting experience, combining the influences of bourbon, Oloroso sherry, and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. Unusually smooth and aromatic, a delightful distillation

I know, you can't pronounce the name, I can't either. But when I was offered a taste at a local reception with friends, I became a fan. As a long time love of McCallan 12 year, I never thought I would enjoy another scotch as much as that, but Auchentoshan 3 Wood changed my mind. I am in love, my new favorite! I have a feeling if you like McCallan, you will love this too. And, it's reasonably priced for a fine single malt scotch!
