Overview: Redbreast Lustau Edition Whiskey is a distinguished expression of Irish single pot still whiskey that combines the craftsmanship of Redbreast with the influence of sherry cask maturation. It's known for its rich and complex flavor profile, making it a favorite among whiskey enthusiasts.
Production: The production of Redbreast Lustau Edition involves a carefully orchestrated process:
Ingredients: The whiskey is made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley, providing a unique combination of flavors.
Fermentation: The barley mash is fermented using the distillery's own yeast, creating a distinctive character.
Distillation: The whiskey is distilled in traditional copper pot stills, which are a hallmark of Irish whiskey production. The slow distillation process contributes to the whiskey's complexity.
Maturation: What sets Redbreast Lustau Edition apart is its maturation process. After an initial aging period in a combination of bourbon and sherry-seasoned oak barrels, the whiskey undergoes an additional maturation in specially selected sherry casks from Bodegas Lustau in Spain. This dual maturation imparts unique flavors and aromas to the whiskey.
Tasting Notes: Redbreast Lustau Edition Whiskey offers a captivating sensory experience:
Appearance: The whiskey boasts a rich, deep amber color, hinting at its sherry influence.
Aroma: On the nose, you'll find a symphony of aromas. There are notes of dark chocolate, dried fruits, and raisins from the sherry casks. This is complemented by the typical Irish whiskey characteristics of green apple, vanilla, and toasted oak.
Palate: The palate is an exquisite balance of flavors. The sherry influence shines through with flavors of figs, dates, and rich, nutty notes. There's also a delightful mix of spices, including cinnamon and nutmeg, along with a hint of tropical fruits. The creamy mouthfeel adds to the overall indulgence.
Finish: Redbreast Lustau Edition delivers a long and warming finish. The sweet sherry notes gradually give way to the whiskey's underlying complexity, leaving a satisfying and enduring impression.
Packaging: Redbreast Lustau Edition is presented in an elegant bottle featuring the distinctive Redbreast label. The packaging reflects the whiskey's heritage and quality, making it a prized addition to any collection.
Serving: This whiskey is best enjoyed neat or with a drop or two of water to unlock its full range of flavors. Its rich and complex character makes it a delightful sipping whiskey, perfect for special occasions and moments of indulgence.
Conclusion: Redbreast Lustau Edition Whiskey is a testament to the artistry of Irish whiskey making. Its marriage of sherry cask influence with the traditional pot still character results in a whiskey that's both rich and nuanced. Whether you're a seasoned whiskey enthusiast or exploring Irish whiskey for the first time, Redbreast Lustau Edition offers a memorable and rewarding tasting experience. I'm definitely a big fan of these guys, so I certainly could be biased. But this is an excellent whiskey. On the sweeter side thanks to the sherry--there are dark tree fruits knocking around starting with the nose and carrying all the way through. Caramel and vanilla showing on the mid palate, but they're under a bunch of fruits and spices. Sweet finish.
Big hit with the whisky lover. The sherry finish is smooth and exactly what you want at the end of this big taste
Redbreast Lustau is a NAS single pot whiskey. The whiskey is matured between 9 to 12 years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry casks, before being vatted and finished in first-fill oloroso sherry butts from Bodegas Lustau in Jerez for an additional year. Non-chill-filtered, it is bottled at 46% ABV. It pours a light amber touched with a reddish hue. The nose is spice and honey and a backdrop of ripe plum and fig. In the mouth those same flavors burst forth, first the honey and spice of the pot still, and than the fruitiness of the sherry influence which is full and enveloping. It is at the point you begin to notice the gentle warmth of the 46%ABV.. I am enjoying this very much. I am not going to say this is better than the wonderful 12 year old. However, it is perhaps as good, and is different enough to warrant a space in your home.
