Overview: Larceny Bourbon, available through Third Base Market & Spirits, is a distinguished Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey known for its rich and smooth character. This technical description provides an in-depth look at the key characteristics and production processes that make Larceny a cherished choice among bourbon enthusiasts.
Ingredients: Larceny Bourbon is crafted from premium ingredients, including:
Grains: A high-quality grain bill, primarily consisting of corn, along with malted barley and a small amount of wheat, contributes to the bourbon's sweet and mellow flavor profile.
Yeast: Carefully selected yeast strains are used during fermentation to influence the development of unique flavor compounds and the whiskey's overall character.
Water: Kentucky's limestone-filtered water, celebrated for its purity, plays a crucial role in the production, ensuring consistency and enhancing the whiskey's quality.
Distillation: The production of Larceny Bourbon follows a meticulous distillation process:
Milling: Grains are finely milled to create a mash, exposing starches for fermentation.
Mashing: The milled grains are combined with water and heated to create a mash. Enzymes in the malted barley facilitate the conversion of starches into fermentable sugars.
Fermentation: The mash is transferred to fermentation tanks, where chosen yeast strains initiate fermentation, typically lasting several days. During this time, yeast converts sugars into alcohol and develops key flavor compounds.
Distillation: The fermented wash undergoes distillation in traditional copper pot stills or column stills, concentrating the alcohol content while separating undesirable elements. The resulting new make spirit is carefully collected and assessed for quality.
Aging: Larceny Bourbon is aged for a variable duration in new charred oak barrels, allowing for the development of its rich flavor profile and complexity. The exact aging period may vary due to the blending of various aged whiskeys.
Tasting Notes: Larceny Bourbon offers a smooth and flavorful tasting experience. Tasting notes may include:
Appearance: The bourbon displays a deep amber hue, indicative of its aging and proof.
Aroma: The nose is greeted with inviting aromas of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak, complemented by hints of butterscotch, dried fruits, and a touch of baking spices.
Palate: On the palate, expect a harmonious blend of flavors. Sweet corn, toffee, and butterscotch are interwoven with notes of cinnamon, black pepper, and a subtle nuttiness. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and velvety.
Finish: The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of caramel, oak, and a gentle warmth, showcasing the bourbon's depth and well-balanced character.
Packaging: Larceny Bourbon is typically presented in a classic and straightforward bottle, reflecting its traditional appeal and commitment to delivering a smooth and flavorful bourbon.
Conclusion: Larceny Bourbon, available through Third Base Market & Spirits, stands as a testament to the rich bourbon-making traditions of Kentucky. Crafted with precision, utilizing a high corn content and a small amount of wheat, and aged to perfection, this bourbon offers a smooth and flavorful tasting experience. Known for its approachability and well-balanced profile, Larceny Bourbon is a definitive choice for those seeking a traditional and exceptionally enjoyable bourbon expression.
I avoided Larceny forever primarily due to my dislike of Maker's Mark; I admittedly lumped all wheated bourbons into the 'nasty like Maker's' category. Then I read a Larceny review explaining the differences between it and MM, and an opinion of how much better it was all around.... the nose, the palate, the flavor profile, the finish, the smoothness, the mouthfeel..... Well, I just had to give it a try, and Wow, was I pleasantly surprised. I really like this bourbon. To me, the flavor profile is heavy on caramel and vanilla. The mouthfeel is relatively thick, chewey and buttery smooth, and the finish is a nice sweet, lingering burn. Definitely sweeter and more mellow than high rye bourbons. This is a staple for me now.
If you prefer a wheated bourbon, and don't want to break the bank, this is a great deal. So convenient to order from Third Base, too. Will order again!
