Tasting Notes and Technical Description:

Visual Appearance: Lagavulin 16 offers a deep, rich amber color, almost akin to burnished gold. The slow, oily legs that coat the glass hint at the complexity and the full-bodied nature of the whisky, a testament to its lengthy maturation.

Nose (Aroma): The nose is intense, filled with a signature Islay peat smoke that is both earthy and medicinal. Underneath the smoky façade, you’ll find layers of brine, seaweed, and a hint of iodine. These maritime elements are accented by subtler notes of dried fruit, specifically raisins and prunes, and a touch of leather.

Palate (Taste): The first sip confirms that this is a robust, full-bodied whisky. The palate is a skillful blend of flavors ranging from intense smoky peat to sweeter undertones of sherry, caramel, and dark chocolate. Mid-palate, you'll experience a crescendo of spices, notably black pepper, before giving way to a chewy, malty sweetness that complements the overarching smokiness.

Finish: The finish is exceptionally long and warming, dominated by smoky, peaty nuances and a lingering saltiness that calls back to its maritime origins. A final, surprising hint of licorice and oak leaves a complex, satisfying aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel of Lagavulin 16 is exceptionally oily and viscous, filling the palate with its complex flavor profile. Despite its formidable character and 43% ABV, the whisky is smooth, with the alcohol perfectly integrated into the experience.

I gave this as a gift, so I can't speak from personal experience. But my brother says, "It is the BEST!"

The original smoke powerhouse

Still the most visceral response I've ever had to any spirit--the big campfire and bacon nose grabbed me right away and instantly convinced me 20+ years ago that I not only loved scotch, but had found one I could instantly cite if anyone asked whether I had a particular favorite. It's probably still my all-time favorite whisky. The smoke hits from arm's length, if not from across the room. The alcohol is quite subdued in comparison to other smoke-bomb whiskies, though it warms you within seconds after a sip. I wish I could always have this on my bar, but I'm too tempted to drink it all the time, and the price is just beyond reach for an everyday drinker.
