Ingredients and Production: Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie is crafted with precision and care, using the following key ingredients and production techniques:

  1. Malted Barley: The whisky is made from 100% Scottish barley, specifically from the Inverness area. This choice of barley imparts a unique terroir to the final product.

  2. Water: Islay's natural water sources, including the Octomore Spring, are used to create the spirit. These sources are known for their pure and mineral-rich water.

  3. Single Farming: Bruichladdich is known for its commitment to transparency and terroir. The distillery sources barley from individual Islay farms, celebrating the unique characteristics of each.

  4. Distillation: The Classic Laddie is typically distilled in tall, narrow-necked stills, preserving the fruity and floral notes in the spirit. It is distilled to a relatively high ABV, showcasing the natural flavors.

  5. Maturation: The whisky is aged in a variety of cask types, including American oak, French wine, and sherry casks. The use of a range of cask types contributes to the complexity of the final product.

Not the usual smoke blast from Islay

I like virtually every whisky from Islay, which means I virtually always like a peaty, smoky whisky. This is not that, but it's made so skillfully it's an excellent addition to the island's output, even if by profile it's an outlier. This is a much sweeter dram, though I would not go so far as to call it sweet overall, nor dessert-y. It starts with graham crackers and spicy floral notes on the nose, with graham crackers carrying through the palate alongside fruity notes and bits of spice. This is complex and interesting enough for most drinkers but must be the most approachable dram from Islay that I've had. You certainly can't miss the bottle, and I have a feeling there will usually be one of those turquoise hydrants on my bar for years to come.

Packs a Punch

This bottle couldn't be more deceiving. It looks all approachable with its Tiffany turquoise blue bottle, but what's inside is something altogether different. This is a big, bold, sweet and hot Islay Scotch. You taste the peat and feel the heat. It's like a campfire in your mouth, with a little of the flame. This is not for the faint of heart, but if you like it hot (100 proof), this might be an enjoyable pour.
