This technical description provides a detailed look at the key characteristics and meticulous production processes that make Rod & Hammer Bourbon a coveted choice among whiskey enthusiasts.

Ingredients: Rod & Hammer Single Barrel Cask Bourbon 115.2 Proof is carefully crafted from premium ingredients, including:

  1. Grains: A classic bourbon grain bill primarily composed of corn, complemented by rye and malted barley, creates a whiskey known for its rich and complex flavor profile.

  2. Yeast: Carefully selected yeast strains are used during fermentation, influencing the development of unique flavor compounds and the whiskey's overall character.

  3. Water: Quality water from the region where the bourbon is produced is used throughout the production process, ensuring consistency and enhancing the whiskey's quality.

Distillation: The production of Rod & Hammer Single Barrel Cask Bourbon 115.2 Proof follows a rigorous distillation process:

  1. Milling: Grains are finely milled to create a mash, exposing starches for fermentation.

  2. Mashing: The milled grains are combined with water and heated to create a mash. Enzymes in malted barley facilitate the conversion of starches into fermentable sugars.

  3. Fermentation: The mash is transferred to fermentation tanks, where chosen yeast strains initiate fermentation, a process typically lasting several days. During this time, yeast converts sugars into alcohol and develops key flavor compounds.

  4. Distillation: The fermented mash undergoes distillation in traditional copper pot stills or column stills, concentrating the alcohol content while separating undesirable elements. The resulting distillate is carefully collected and evaluated for quality.

Aging: Rod & Hammer Single Barrel Cask Bourbon 115.2 Proof undergoes an essential aging process:

  1. Barrel Selection: The distilled spirit is placed in new charred oak barrels, with meticulous barrel selection ensuring each batch achieves exceptional quality.

  2. Warehouse Aging: The aging occurs within warehouses, where the bourbon interacts with the oak barrels. Temperature fluctuations and wood influence impart unique flavors and complexity.

  3. Aging Duration: While the age can vary by barrel, Rod & Hammer Bourbon is typically aged for around 4-7 years, allowing it to develop a rich and well-balanced flavor profile.

Bottling and Proofing: Following aging, each bottle of Rod & Hammer Single Barrel Cask Bourbon 115.2 Proof is carefully proofed to its final bottling strength, which is precisely 57.6% ABV (115.2 proof), allowing for a robust and intense tasting experience.

Nice one but not quite a top value

I'd forgotten that this was one of the more-expensive bottles from a recent order. It drank like a more ordinary bourbon, not really showing the heft of a barrel cut. Smoky, woody, lots of corn. Great flavors and aromas. Body a bit on the light side. Easy to drink and always welcome on my bar, but it was outshone by multiple cheaper whiskies in the same box.

Fantastic bourbon. Just enough edge without being harsh.
