Overview: Michter's US1 Small Batch Bourbon is a well-regarded example of Kentucky bourbon craftsmanship, known for its careful small batch production, rich flavor profile, and the legacy of the Michter's brand. This technical description offers an in-depth look at the key characteristics and meticulous production that make Michter's US1 Small Batch Bourbon a beloved choice among bourbon enthusiasts.

Ingredients: Michter's US*1 Small Batch Bourbon is crafted from premium ingredients, including:

  1. Grains: A meticulously chosen grain bill, primarily featuring corn, along with rye and malted barley, contributes to the bourbon's balanced and complex flavor profile.

Distillation and Aging: The production process of Michter's US*1 Small Batch Bourbon follows a precise method:

  1. Milling: The grains are finely milled to create grist, exposing starches for fermentation.

  2. Mashing: The grist is combined with water and heated to create a mash. Enzymes in the malted barley facilitate the conversion of starches into fermentable sugars.

  3. Fermentation: The mash is transferred to fermentation tanks, where chosen yeast strains initiate fermentation. This process typically lasts several days, allowing yeast to convert sugars into alcohol and develop key flavor compounds.

  4. Distillation: The fermented wash undergoes double distillation in traditional copper pot stills or column stills, capturing the unique essence of the bourbon. The resulting new make spirit is carefully collected and assessed for quality.

Aging: Michter's US*1 Small Batch Bourbon is typically aged in new, charred American white oak barrels for an undisclosed but relatively short period, typically around 4 to 6 years. This aging allows the bourbon to develop its rich and flavorful character.

Tasting Notes: Michter's US*1 Small Batch Bourbon offers a well-balanced and flavorful tasting experience. Tasting notes may include:

  • Appearance: The bourbon exhibits a deep amber hue, reflecting its aging and proof.

  • Aroma: The nose is met with inviting aromas of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak, complemented by notes of butterscotch, toffee, and a hint of cinnamon.

  • Palate: On the palate, anticipate a harmonious blend of flavors. Sweet corn, caramel, and baking spices mingle with hints of dried fruit, nutmeg, and a subtle smokiness. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and satisfying.

  • Finish: The finish is medium in length, with lingering notes of oak, dark chocolate, and a gentle sweetness, showcasing the bourbon's balance and depth.

Packaging: Michter's US*1 Small Batch Bourbon is typically presented in an elegantly designed bottle and packaging, reflecting its premium quality and the legacy of the Michter's brand.

Conclusion: Michter's US*1 Small Batch Bourbon, available through Third Base Market & Spirits, represents the essence of Kentucky bourbon craftsmanship. Crafted with precision, utilizing a balanced grain bill and careful aging, this bourbon provides a well-balanced and flavorful tasting experience. Renowned for its balance, depth, and the legacy of the Michter's brand, this bourbon remains a cherished choice for bourbon enthusiasts seeking a classic and memorable American whiskey expression.

I'm against the grain here, and didn't enjoy this

This one has a huge following, with tons of people loving it for the price, and plenty of those seeming to love it at any price. I found it sticky sweet, too hot, and the barrel char was acrid for my taste. I'm not sure exactly how I'd mix it, either. But, then, I never mix, so I know nothing of how to do that, anyway. If you like this whiskey, or someone told you that you probably would, you can safely ignore me. Many of the people I drink with most often love this stuff. Maybe I'll pour the rest of it for them this weekend.
