Overview: Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon is a unique and innovative expression of bourbon whiskey, celebrated for its adventurous aging process, complexity, and maritime influence. Produced by Jefferson's Bourbon, this technical description provides insights into the key characteristics and meticulous production that make Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon a sought-after choice among bourbon enthusiasts.

Ingredients: Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon is crafted from premium ingredients, including:

  1. Grains: A blend of corn, rye, and malted barley forms the bourbon's mash bill, contributing to its complexity and depth of flavor.

Distillation and Aging: The production process of Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon follows traditional methods, with a unique twist:

  1. Milling and Mashing: The grains are finely milled, and the resulting grist is mashed to create a sugary liquid known as wort. This wort is fermented to produce a wash with the desired alcohol content.

  2. Fermentation: The wash is transferred to fermentation tanks, where specific yeast strains initiate fermentation. This process typically lasts several days, allowing yeast to convert sugars into alcohol and develop key flavor compounds.

  3. Distillation: The fermented wash undergoes double distillation in copper pot stills or column stills, capturing the essence of the bourbon. The resulting new make spirit is carefully collected and assessed for quality.

Aging: What sets Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon apart is its unique aging process. After initial aging in traditional oak barrels on land, the bourbon is further aged at sea. This maritime aging exposes the bourbon to the constant motion of the ocean, temperature fluctuations, and salty sea air. The barrels travel on ships, crossing the equator multiple times during their journey, which imparts distinct flavors and characteristics to the bourbon.

Tasting Notes: Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon offers a one-of-a-kind tasting experience. Tasting notes may include:

  • Appearance: The bourbon displays a rich amber hue, influenced by both land and sea aging.

  • Aroma: The nose is filled with captivating aromas of caramel, briny sea air, and vanilla, complemented by notes of toffee, tropical fruits, and a hint of oak.

  • Palate: On the palate, expect a complex interplay of flavors. Sweet caramel and butterscotch are balanced by maritime elements, including a subtle saltiness and oceanic minerality. Layers of tropical fruit, toasted coconut, and a touch of spice add depth to the experience. The mouthfeel is velvety and intriguing.

  • Finish: The finish is long and evolving, with a gentle warmth that lingers. Elements of brine, oak, and a hint of sea salt contribute to the bourbon's distinctive maritime character.

Packaging: Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon is typically presented in a specially designed bottle and labeling, reflecting its adventurous aging process and premium quality.

Conclusion: Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon, available through Third Base Market & Spirits, stands as a testament to bourbon innovation. Crafted with precision, characterized by its unique ocean aging process, and aged to perfection, this bourbon provides a captivating and multifaceted tasting experience. Renowned for its maritime influence, complexity, and adventurous spirit, Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon remains a coveted choice for bourbon enthusiasts seeking a truly distinctive and memorable American whiskey expression for special occasions and exploration.

Truly salty and worth the higher price

I wish I could drink this all the time but the price makes it a bit more of an occasional treat. There's clear briny salt on both the nose and the palate, but the floral and caramel notes are stronger yet. It's complex, sweet and delicious from start to finish. The sea-aging seemed like a party trick when I first heard of it but I've loved every pour of this I've had over the years.
