Overview: Springbank 15 Year is a distinguished Single Malt Scotch whisky produced in the historic Campbeltown region of Scotland. Known for its commitment to traditional craftsmanship and unique character, Springbank has a dedicated following among whisky connoisseurs.

Production: Springbank 15 Year is crafted with a focus on traditional methods, emphasizing quality over quantity:

  1. Location: The distillery is situated in Campbeltown, a region once famed for its whisky production. Springbank is one of the few remaining distilleries in this area.

  2. Ingredients: The whisky is made from locally sourced barley and pure spring water from Crosshill Loch, contributing to its distinct flavor profile.

  3. Distillation: Springbank uses copper pot stills for distillation, which allows for greater control over the spirit's character. The spirit is distilled twice, resulting in a richer and more robust whisky.

  4. Maturation: Springbank 15 Year undergoes aging in a combination of oak casks, including sherry and bourbon casks. This extended maturation period imparts depth and complexity to the whisky.

Tasting Notes: Springbank 15 Year is celebrated for its complex and full-bodied flavors:

  • Aroma: The nose is rich and aromatic, with notes of toffee, dried fruits, and a subtle maritime influence. There are hints of brine and sea spray, reminiscent of Campbeltown's coastal location.

  • Palate: On the palate, Springbank 15 Year is well-balanced and layered. Flavors of raisins, nuts, and oak spices are prominent. There's a delightful interplay between sweet and savory notes, with a touch of smoke and a hint of saltiness.

  • Finish: The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of fruitcake, vanilla, and a gentle smokiness.

Packaging: Springbank 15 Year is presented in a classic whisky bottle with a label featuring the distillery's logo and the whisky's age statement. Its packaging reflects the brand's heritage and commitment to quality.

Wonderful but now pricey

This used to be one of my go-to bottles. It's simply wonderful. At $300 after tax, it's doubled in the last year on this site and is no longer in a class of its own. It's in a class with a whole bunch of good if not better bottles! For instance, the Glenmorangie Signet is now 50% cheaper than this. So are a dozen of better scotches.

An absolute gem!

I first discovered this when buying a bottle for my birthday - it came highly recommended by the shop attendant and was a nice complement to the Compass Box Great King St. Artist's Blend. The Artist's Blend was a big hit until we opened the Springbank 15, which blew everyone away with its depth and complexity. I didn't see anything about rum cask maturing on the bottle, but I've read that it is in fact rum matured, like the Balvenie Carribean Cask. The difference being that the Balvenie is 43%, and this Springbank definitely benefits from the extra ABV at 46%. The Springbank is non-chill-filtered as well, which is something I always look for in a scotch. And, finally, there is no colorant added. Too many scotches are chill filtered, lower ABV and have colorant! Keep an eye out for these 46%, non-chill-filtered, no-colorant scotches as they are often quite good, and the Springbank 15 is no exception. Absolutely delicious!
